TM6, electronic travel steps and visa basics
The acronyms around Thai arrivals can be confusing. Here is a plain-language map of the forms, the electronic steps and the visas — and where our help stops.
Sorting out the acronyms
Travelers hear several terms and assume they are the same thing. They are not. A TM6 is the arrival and departure card — the small form discussed in our arrival-card guide. An ETA or electronic travel authorization is an online pre-travel step some countries introduce; where it applies, it is completed before boarding. A visa is a separate permission tied to your nationality, your purpose and the length of your stay. Keeping these three ideas apart makes the whole process calmer.
Do you need a visa?
It depends on your passport and your plans. Many visitors travel visa-exempt for short tourism stays, while longer stays, work, study or certain nationalities need a visa arranged in advance. Because the rules shift, always confirm your own situation through Thailand’s own immigration channels or your nearest consulate before you book. We are happy to help you locate the right page and understand the wording, but the requirement itself is not ours to decide.
Electronic steps before you fly
Electronic travel steps usually ask for the same core facts as the paper forms: identity, passport details, flight, accommodation and dates. The classic errors are rushed typing, a mis-typed passport number, and dates that do not line up with the booking. We review these fields for consistency so the version you submit is clean — you still submit it yourself through the proper channel.
Extensions and onward travel
If you plan to stay beyond your initial permission, extensions are handled through Thailand’s own channels, often at a local office. Bring your passport, your arrival record and any supporting papers. We can help you assemble and check the paperwork, but the decision and the process belong to the proper authorities, never to us.
